Celebrations & Wins

In the world of the smom, wins might be hard to come by -not because wins don't happen, but because we are often we are adjacent to those celebratory moments. I frequently hear about my stepsons' accomplishments from my husband. Now that the boys are grown, they will text or call their dad, and he shares with me. As a younger smother, this would often bother me. Why can't I be first on the call list for important moments? In essence, the moments are not about me... but about them.

Does anyone else find that this role often reveals some ugly spots in your character? It has definitely been true for me, and about a decade ago, I finally got over myself and began to enjoy the opportunity to celebrate the moments from my position on the team! Seeing my husband so happy and then hearing from the boys at various points in time about their experiences makes the moments last longer. Again-it's not the moment and it's not me; it's the process of winning for them. That becomes the joy, the memory, and the opportunity to celebrate.

My dad always said, "You get what you celebrate!" What if we celebrate the opportunities-however they come to us-and be thankful? I definitely want more wins for our family, so I'll choose to celebrate each and every one of them with the people I love the most. Choose what you want more of aand celebrate that!
